Betty Stone, a long-time resident of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born on July 19, 1938, in Danville, Virginia, Betty was the daughter of the late Otis Chitwood and Nora Simmons Chitwood. While born in Danville and having lived in Chatham, she spent the majority of her life in the coastal community of Virginia Beach.
Betty dedicated her life to her home and found joy in the simple things, most notably her lifelong appreciation for owls. She was a woman of quiet interests who valued the familiarity of her Virginia roots and the many decades she spent by the coast.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Nora Chitwood.
She is survived by her sons, Bobby Bercaw (Rita) and Richard Bercaw (Mary); daughters, Barbara Saxton and Betty Richardson; sister Glenda Smithson; Great-granddaughter, Kayden Bray; and cousins; Charlie White, Eugene White, and Debra Gentry.
